Well, it looks as if we have a great F1 season brewing. The new rule changes are, in my opinion, almost there. If they can only get rid of the rule where they have to keep the same engine in the car for 2 Grand Prix race weekends. Changing or blowing a motor causes a 10 place grid penalty. The problem I am seeing is that most of these motors can not survive 2 weekends. If the idea set forward by the FIA was to limit the money spent I think they missed the mark. It seems to me that rebuilding a motor before it detonates into more pieces then went into it is a better cost cutting measure. That way we get to see better racing as opposed to seeing one third of the field moving back 10 spots on the grid like in Malaysia. The word is in 2008 it only gets worse. Engines will have to last 3 weekends and trannies 4. This is most extreme motor sport on the planet and that is why we watch it. There are such ridiculous amounts of money spent in this sport I can’t see this rule makes a whole lot of difference. We don’t watch it because Ferrari can make a motor last 3 weekends. All I care about is one race at a time. And as for the racing... Is Michael getting old? At least he has a lot of pictures of himself on the podium just in case he forgets what it looks like. Just kidding I have great respect for Michael and his unbelievable ability to assemble a great team but I have always been an underdog fan. But all this is telling me that Michael isn't the only prodigy. He can work miracles if the car is capable of working miracles too. He seems to be getting out driven by quite a few cars and drivers. I think I will always be a Fernando fan just because we all have watched him really mature rather quickly. After all he rook mahbalus!. My new underdog? Scott Speed? No! Scott change you name to Needfa Speed. My pick for the new hot shot is Nicos Rosberg. I think Kimi is about to start loosing ground to him pretty quickly unless he can keep a car under him. But only time will tell. Next, what’s up with Audi and their diesel P1 entry at Sebring? I had to think long and hard on this one. It’s not like they are using some E85 type fuel like corn alcohol, they are using diesel. It is still a petroleum product that has to be part of a refinement process. My guess is to refine a diesel fuel as pure as what they were running almost approaches regular gasoline. As far as I can tell it was almost as if it were the result of a bet. See we told ya we could do it! Maybe it was just as simple as trying to promote the technology for upcoming diesel European cars and to show they can produce a spirited upscale car instead of the perceived econo-boxes. How they handle the narrow hp and torque curves will be interesting. A street car needs a slightly more drivable torque curve. What I see coming out will be the equivalence to the original Porsche 930. The torque curve will resemble the difference between off boost and on boost. OK no boost, no boost, BANG, Oh there’s the boost, whoa too much lift your foot. Lastly the PCA season is well under way with a few of the Northeast members already with Sebring under their 2006 belts. Most of the Northeast crew heads out this upcoming Wednesday for the first full race weekend at Atlanta that includes an enduro. For years we had wanted to race there but 19 hours one way was too far to drive for a 30 minute Sprint race. Now that they added another 2.5 hours of drive time we can justify the 38-40 round trip. Makes perfect sense doesn't it? Anyways, this is going to be a great weekend. This event has set a new record for single class cars signed up. There will be 36 F-class cars there for Andy and I to play with. We have always had a lot but up to this time I think the record was about 32. It is definitely one of the most popular classes with a lot of great drivers. Too bad Racer’s Edge, Karl Poetl will not be there. Karl is very quick in his F-class 944S2 but has decided to run this year in the Speed Channel Touring Car series in a BMW. Sebring was his first race that aired on March 19th. We didn’t get to see much of him on camera but he did pretty well starting 21st and finishing 13th (after a car DQ’d and moved him up one spot). He also got the fastest rookie award and $600 prize money after his $1000 entry fee. The latest big racing news is that they added Daytona to the race schedule in October. That is a must attend race. I no longer have a desire to race Sebring simply because of how rough it is on the cars. So next month you will get to here all about the Road Atlanta trip. |
