The Renaissance, the Gilded Age, steam locomotives, the Roman Empire, discovering the wonders of a new continent. Sometimes we reflect on history and we dream. And as we dream of a bygone era, we ponder, "Imagine what it must have been like to live during the golden age of ...".
Well, you may not have realized it, but right now we are living in "The Golden Age of Porsche." In fact in a rare alignments of the planets, it's a Golden Age for both the car and the Northeast Region.
Never before has the Porsche enthusiast had so many great sports cars available. From nicely restored classics of the 50s and 60s to good, inexpensive 914s and 911s from the 70s. A strong economy since the early 80s results in many clean, inexpensive, low mile cars that are available on the market, including 911s, 924s, 944s, 928s and 968s. These cars are safer, more reliable, don't rust and perform better than most of the pre-1980 models.
While brand new examples of the last and best of the air-cooled 911s are readily available, we are now also blessed with the wonderful Boxster and the introduction of the all-new water-cooled 911. There are many Porsche choices now for people of every taste and budget, from $2000 old 914s, 924s and 944s to million dollar 911 GT1s. The Northeast Region of the Porsche Club of America is the best it has ever been. The autocross program is popular with excellent systems and sites. The driver's ed program is run like a fine-tuned machine. Then there's lots of other fun stuff from Rambles to Rumbles, educational tech sessions, challenging rallies, relaxing tours, fascinating monthly meetings, elegant concourses, autocross schools, etc.
The Nor'easter is fantastic too, having won best newsletter award for past 2 years and our region's web site, which was the first, continues to be the best and break new ground. Our region is growing rapidly and drivers benefit from a terrific selection of highly qualified shops to service their cars, north, west and south of Boston (but none east of Boston).
Things have never been so good and we don't know what the future holds. It's possible that the selection of Porsches available in the future may not be as interesting, or possibly lawyers, regulators or fossil fuel problems might curtail our ability to enjoy these cars the way we like to (at full throttle).
I'm excited and I hope you are too! So come on out to some of our events in 1998! Make some friends! Bring your car, and relish in the pleasures that life has to offer! Behold, for your destiny lies before you as you enter the Golden Age of Porsche!
