| Okay,
enough about the stupid SUV already. I'm as guilty as anyone of bashing
Porsche for turning their backs on the sports car crowd, but now we have
to accept it and look at the bright side. I'm sure they'll sell a ton of
those things and make a lot of money. Maybe some of this money will go
back into sports car development and motorsports programs.
In fact, we already may be seeing a dividend in the process. The V8 engine from the SUV is the basis for a new Porsche super car in development. It's going to be called the Porsche 980 (known internally as S1). The mid-mounted 5.4 liter V8 will be twin turbo charged, producing 700 horsepower. Top speed is rumored to be around 223 mph. The car will have a carbon fiber body and will go into production in 2003 or later. Just the thing to blow the doors off some feeble Ferrari F50 or McLaren F1. Supposedly this car is based on the aborted Le Mans 2000 car. But who knows, maybe this was their secret plan all along. Meanwhile, if the Boxster S doesn't get your juices flowing, how about the Boxster RS? Look for this car in about 12 months. On another subject, it's that time again for finding people to serve on the board of directors for 2001. We expect to have a couple openings, so if you are interested in helping out, please contact the Chairman of the Nominating Committee, Steve Ross, whose number appears in the masthead. And of course we are always looking for people to take charge in other areas as well, such as the autocross, drivers ed and concours programs. If you would like to be more involved with the management of some of our activities, please contact the respective committee chairman or any board member. These are fun things to participate in, so come join us! The region has no track days this month, so maybe I'll zip up to NHIS for one of the "open testing days" run by the track on Thursdays. These are fun, but make you really appreciate the safe and organized events our region runs. You basically show up at the track, plop down 100 bucks and off you go. There are only two flagging stations: Pit out (which is also "control" and "ambulance") and the tree house. So you better keep your eyes open. Also, you'll be out there with every sort of racecar and sports car imaginable with every type of driver imaginable. So you REALLY better keep your eyes open. Although we have no track days this month, we do have two autocrosses on the 6th and 20th. Last month we had our first "Autocross Test Day" with about 20 participants. It was a lot of fun with a test track, skid pad and time for plenty of practice runs with an informal atmosphere. Thanks go mostly to Bill Seymour who organized this event. You know, autocrossing is an interesting sport. You spend a large amount of time preparing for, and driving to the event. Then you spend less than 10 minutes actually racing. In fact, your goal is to spend as little time as possible enjoying the hobby, because the faster you go, the less time you spend driving. There is nothing else where so much excitement and pleasure is experienced in such a short period of time. Well, maybe one other thing! |
