Cars are modes of transportation. Cars are machines. Cars are conglomerations of metal, plastic, rubber and glass. Or is a car perhaps much more than that? Certainly nobody needs to spend over $100,000 on a 911 Turbo when a $30,000 car can get you to work and back just as well. So what is it that motivates people to spend such large amounts of money on a Porsche? And why is it predominately men who do so?

To learn the answer to this, let's travel back in time to the 1830's and board a sailing vessel known as the Beagle, which has set course for the Galapagos Islands, located 500 miles off the coast of South America. On board is a scientist named Charles Darwin. Mr. Darwin is on an expedition to these islands to study the unique animal species found there. Soon he will devise his famous evolutionary theory known as "natural selection." These theories were described in his landmark book The Origin of the Species.

What Charles Darwin found is that through the process of natural selection, animals better suited to survival are the ones that pass their genes on to future generations. This can also explain some of the differences between men and women. Men have been physically and mentally bred to exhibit aggressive behavior such as hunting and fighting. Aggressive men were the ones who survived (often defeating other men in the process). These men were able to reproduce and to provide for and protect their families. While for women, the cautious and nurturing ones were the most successful at breeding, protecting their offspring from life's perils, and passing on their genetic code to future generations.

Porsche builds sports cars (well, not counting that SUV they're working on) and sports cars are the embodiment of strength, speed, agility and power. When driving a good sports car, you feel the car is an extension of your own being. Suddenly it's not just a separate machine, but part of you. You find that YOU have become stronger, faster, more agile and more powerful. These are attributes that are appealing to all men. And of course, a fine sports car has a beautiful shape with sensuous curves - another thing that attracts men. So it really does make perfect sense (genetically speaking) when a man spends $100,000 or more on a Porsche.

Which reminds me of a joke. Why do men like Porsches more than they like women?  Because a Porsche is more likely to turn over in the morning!
