| Two
years ago this month, the subject of my column was “Cool Websites”. Where
the Internet is concerned, two years is a long time. So I think this month’s
column will be entitled “Cool Websites Revisited”.
Although already mentioned last time, I can’t write this column without mentioning three sites again. The official Porsche site is www.porsche.com (choose “North America”). The site includes street cars, race cars and some fantastic pictures of the Carrera GT supercar that you can use for your computer’s wallpaper, plus various videos and other multimedia elements. The PCA national site is www.pca.org and our region’s website is www.porschenet.com. Our region website is where you’ll find all sorts of information for local Porsche enthusiasts, including Nor’easter columns, the best Porsche classifieds on the web, and the return of “photo of the month”. For up to date news and lots of current information on Porsche and other German marques, check out http://porsche.theautobahn.com. As the Internet has matured, the subject matter of sites has become more specialized. In the early years, you’d find “Porsche” sites. Then sites devoted to particular models began to emerge. As a 968 owner, one of the sites I enjoy most is www.968.net. I found that it’s actually quite easy (and free) to create your own web site. For fun, I created one about the rare 968 Turbo RS racecar, so in the name of shameless self-promotion, checkout www.968turbo.homestead.com. Another region member running a website is Steve Berry, http://content.communities.msn.com/MyPorscheClub. His site features pictures from many NER events, a calendar of autocross, driver education and various other events, and a message board. There are also a couple videos including one terrifying autocross video that shows what happens when you stand too close to the course. Speaking of videos, if you want to see the absolute coolest video you can download from the Internet, here it is. It’s a 10 minute movie called “Getaway” filmed by a couple guys in a black 911. Similar to the famous cult classic film, Rendezvous, these guys mounted three cameras on the car, wait for the cops in a Volvo wagon to pull them over, then take off driving like madmen through the streets of Stockholm, Sweden at dawn. Go to www.streetracing.com and scroll down to the item titled “Cops? Whatever!” Beware that this file is 100 megabytes, so you better have a cable modem and/or plan on downloading while you sleep. www.intergate.bc.ca/personal/dsmith/ is a Porsche 962 page, made by a guy in Canada who is building 962 clones. It’s pretty interesting if you’re a gear-head. For 914 fanatics, try http://www.dgi.net/914/index.html which is the “Renegade Porsche 914” chat site. A very popular community of Porsche owners with discussion boards for various models and subject matters can be found at www.rennlist.com. www.ebay.com
is a great source for good Porsche “stuff” for sale. In fact, you’ll
find “stuff” you won’t find anywhere else, and often at a great bargain.
Cars, parts, brochures, accessories, shop manuals, scale models and bric-a-brac
off all types can be found. I just installed a new bric-a-brac on my 968
that I bought on ebay and it works great!
