For
a “neat nick” like me this is the time of year which brings nothing but
frustration. Why you might ask, well for example last weekend I spent the
better part of three hours cleaning up our yard after numerous days of
wind and rain. We had leaves, pine needles, and downed branches coating
the grass and driveway to the point that you couldn’t see the pavement.
Unfortunately as fast as I mowed the grass and used the leaf blower to
clean up, more debris fell from the trees right back onto the areas I’d
just passed over. When I finished it looked like I’d never started the
cleanup. I’ll no doubt repeat the whole experience again this weekend.
To add to my frustration our garden tractor will be switched over from lawn mower to snow thrower next week. I’ll also be looking to put the snow tires on Susana’s Audi TT. As memory serves me we had snow falling on the ground prior to Thanksgiving, so there’s not a lot of time left to get ready for winter, gasp! While Boston was experiencing a week plus of ugly wet weather, Susana and I were first in Las Vegas then north of San Diego experiencing spectacular warm and sunny weather. We managed once again to fit some vacation in around my annual fall west coast seafood industry business meeting. While we’re not gamblers we do enjoy checking out the shows, shopping, and great restaurants in Las Vegas. If I could reorient my normal sleep schedule such that I could stay awake for the late shows I’m sure there is even more fun to be had in that city! Everything about Las Vegas is over the top so to speak. At the MGM Grand Hotel you can check out the glassed in lion habitat located in the casino – right where you’d expect to find lions! At the Bellagio Hotel off the lobby is a fine arts museum displaying paintings from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and a glass roofed conservatory with a huge fall flower exhibit – rivaling something you’d see at the spring Boston Flower Show. I particularly enjoyed the Mandalay Bay six acre swimming pool complete with wave action every three minutes or so. If we’d have stayed in Vegas a few more days we could have attended a sumo wrestling tournament at the Mandalay Bay convention center. Who knew there was a following for sumo wrestling in the US! If you’re a sports fan Vegas is the place to be on a fall Saturday or Sunday, the sports betting rooms have TV coverage of every major college football game, the baseball playoffs, and all the pro football games. With so many games to choose from it’s hard to focus on any particular game, I found myself switching from game to game in response to the cheers that emanated from some corner of the room. A lot of the bettors seemed disappointed the Red Sox were blown out of the playoffs so quickly. The Patriots on the other hand weren’t getting a lot of support, I guess they’ve been too successful for too long. I don’t understand how people can spend hours camped out in front of slot machines. While waiting for our flight out of Vegas we watched people coming off airplanes walk right over to slot machines in the concourse waiting area. They couldn’t wait to get to the casinos to start putting coins in the slots! The business portion of our trip took us to the quiet and beautiful La Costa resort north of San Diego. The contrast with Las Vegas was dramatic, a very relaxed and restful environment, with no flashing lights or blaring music to be heard. TVs aren’t on in the lobby or restaurants, and everyone goes to bed at a reasonable hour. We spent an afternoon at the “adult” pool enjoying spectacular sunny weather and several pina colada’s – probably the last warm sunny weather we’ll enjoy for some time. I wish we could have hung around in California for another week so we could have gone to the America Le Mans series race at Laguna Seca. The new Porsche RS Spyder was unveiled at that race and acquitted itself very well finishing first in class and fifth overall. That was a very impressive debut for the new Porsche racecar. Rumor has it that the car can be fitted with a larger engine in the future and thus maybe can compete for an overall win at Le Mans – let’s hope that’s the case. Even in LMP2 trim the car was very quick running as high as second for a portion of the race. Finally as you note elsewhere in this issue, and in a mailing you’ll receive shortly, it’s time to renew your subscription to the NOR’EASTER. I think the $15 annual subscription charge is a bargain, as this publication is your source for information on each year’s many region activities. Each month you’ll find promos on forthcoming events, entertaining articles, event reports, news from Porsche, and technical information. Unfortunately many of you fail to notice the subscription reminders we publish and mail to you. Then several months into the new year, you realize you’ve not received the NOR’EASTER and you wonder what happened. So to avoid having that problem, and to save us the trouble of mailing you back issues, and to make sure you don’t miss out on all our great region events, please send in your subscription renewal as soon as possible. That will greatly simplify our work, and will insure you get uninterrupted service. Plus you will not have me wondering why you opted to not subscribe to this terrific publication! |
