Reserve
the last week in June, 2005 on your calendar, as you’ll want to attend
the 50th Porsche Parade to be held in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The Porsche
Club of America will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary at the 50th Porsche
Parade at a destination close to New England (only 6.5 hours of travel
time from my home north of Boston).
We’ve just returned from a kickoff-planning meeting for the 50th Parade, and suffice to say the overall event will be spectacular in scope. Zone 2 will be hosting the weeklong extravaganza, and their plans for the week are very special indeed. For those of you who might plan on attending (something all of you should consider doing), figure on seeing lots of historic Porsches (50 cars are of course the objective – with one from each year of the club’s existence) including racecars from all eras and many of the Manhattan Trophy winners. Expect to hear from Porsche AG representatives, Porsche race car drivers, Porsche Cars North America officials, and of course representatives from the Porsche family themselves. Rumor has it that there might be some other very special guests at the parade. The scale and scope of what Zone 2 is planning for the week is well beyond any previous parade (even the Boston and Lake Placid events we organized!). Susana and I were in attendance at this organizing meeting, because we’ve been asked to assist in a couple of capacities. Susana has agreed to manage the graphical aspects of the parade, starting with the creation of lots of parade logo options. As you might guess, the location, Hershey, PA, offers several logical design considerations. I’ve agreed to chair the autocross competition (hopefully with lots of help from Northeast Region members (and others) to do the timing and scoring). The site for this event will be about 3 minutes from the parade hotels, on what is the largest paved surface in Pennsylvania. This space is normally used for parking for the Hershey amusement parking, and is larger in size than the footprint for NHIS. We’ll have plenty of room for two mirror image courses, making it possible to complete the autocross event in one day, as we did at the Mont Tremblant parade. The Hershey convention staff is exceedingly accommodating, already committing to provide most of what we’ll need to run the autocross event. I’m very jealous of Central PA Region, as they get to use this site 4 or 5 times per year. Wouldn’t we like to have access to an enormous site, possessing permanent bathrooms, foodservice facilities, billiard table smooth pavement with few light poles and no obstructions. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to work with people anxious to satisfy any request we might have, and at the same time not have them worried about speed limits or noise? Then there is the access to the site, which is practically in the middle of Hershey, with several nearby restaurants; a large factory outlet shopping mall seconds from the site, the Hershey Amusement Park available for your family, and of course the practically next-door Chocolate World. You could bring the whole family with you to an autocross event, and when they got bored watching you compete, they could head off to any number of entertainment options. Wow, what a site to have as your home autocross location. While the 2005 Parade is many months in the future, I do need to be putting plans in place for the autocross competition. My starting point is to put together a talented team of autocross aficionados anxious to help run this event. Of course I want to call on the talents of Northeast Region members as a starting point. As the Northeast Region will have primary responsibility for the running of the event, I need members who can assist with timing and scoring (using our region equipment and software), staging and starting, and control. So if you’re willing to help, please drop me an email or give me a call (dlweber1@earthlink.net or 38rsr@porschenet.com or 978-352-6601). Next I need to remind all of you readers that it is time once again to renew your NOR’EASTER subscription. You should have received a renewal notice in the mail recently (along with your region officer ballot). Many of you for some reason put off immediately sending in your $15 check and renewal form, and of course several months later you can’t find that form. We run the same information in the magazine for several months, but many of you somehow miss that information. So of course what happens is that around May many of you will suddenly wake up to the fact that you’ve not received a magazine for a while, and you’ll send me a note to inquiry as to why you haven’t seen a copy of the publication for some months. I of course then get frustrated with you wondering why you’ve not acted on the many reminders we provided over a four month period. So to avoid being dropped as a subscriber in February, promptly fill out the renewal form, make out a check for $15 payable to NER/PCA, and mail both back to Steve Berry, at 8 Trot Rd, Littleton, MA 01460. If you’ve already misplaced the mailed renewal form (many of you!), you’ll find a renewal form elsewhere in this publication (it will also run in the January and February issues!). You’ll get no points for subsequently contacting me to ask for renewal information, or to ask me to mail you the issues you missed when your subscription lapsed! Note: if you joined the Porsche Club and the Northeast Region in 2003, you received free copies of the publication for the balance of 2003. To continue to receive the NOR’EASTER you must subscribe by filling out a renewal form and mailing in your $15 check. Now that many of you have stored your Porsche for the winter, you’re no doubt looking for something to do with all your free time. I can strongly suggest you invest ($170 at Amazon.Com) in a copy of the newly released updated version of Excellence Was Expected. The new three-volume release is enormous in scope, covering the very beginnings of Porsche right up through the evolution of the Cayenne and the forthcoming Carrera GT. If you’re a fan of Porsche this is a must read, must own addition to your library. It works especially well as a gift this holiday season – one you could give yourself if you can’t talk anyone else into so gifting you! Wishing all of you an enjoyable holiday season and best wishes for a successful and fun filled 2004! |
