NOR'EASTER Online - September 2000
Northeast Region Logo
Our There are several upcoming events of note that are worthy of reminders.  While it is too late to register for the September 16th Concours d’Elegance at The Pierce House in Lincoln, MA.  What better way to spend a Fall Saturday morning than joining fellow NER members showing off their pride and joy.

September 23 & 24 is the Zone 1 Autocross to be held at our “home” course in Ayer, MA.  Contact Don Wolcott (781.631.4147; dwolcott@flash.net) to register or Ellen Beck (603.778.9522; ebeck944@mediaone.net) with any questions.

As of this writing there was still room on the Fall Tour to Martha’s Vineyard.  This should be great fun beginning with a tour to the ferry at Wood’s Hole and continuing with a full circum-drive of the Island.  Check with Robert Cohen at 987.443.5794 or Cohen_robert@ics.nlvmail.com.

October 22nd is a Brunch Ramble, starting in Stow, MA and driving some fun roads to a Brunch location. There is no fee though advanced registration will be appreciated and brunch will be on your own. Look for details in this issue of ‘Nor’easter’ and contact Bruce Hauben at 978.897.3801 or Bruce993@PorscheNet.com with any questions.

November 12th promises to be very exciting. In addition to the photography contest which will be held in the airplane hanger on Bob Collings estate in Stow, MA we’ll be getting a narrated tour of the Collings Foundation’s historic airplanes, hard rubber tire racing cars and beautifully restored antique automobiles. I’ve seen Bob’s collections before and assure you that you do not want to miss this event. The antique automobiles are indeed works of art, no less so than a Van Gogh exhibit.  Send in the registration form you’ll find in this issue.

Member Profile of the Month
While Chuck Hastings is one of our newer NER members he’s certainly not new to the Porsche family. In fact that relationship goes back more than 30 years to his 1955 1500 Speedster.  Furthermore, that Speedster created the opportunity for Chuck to meet his future wife.  He had registered for a road rally and at the last minute his navigator had to cancel out leaving Chuck to both drive and navigate…quite a chore. Suzanne was one of the other entrants in the rally and eventually became his life’s partner.

Over the intervening years Chuck has owned a 1956 1600 Super Coupe and still has his 1957 1600 Coupe and, by those standards, a very modern 1983 944. His driving interests through the years have included hill climbs, time trials, gymkhanas, autocross and road rallies.  In fact, among the many others, he has competed in the Cumberland 24 Hr. Rally.

A natural question crops up here, why is Chuck a new PCA member after all these years? It was just one of those things. While he was a member of various car clubs over the years, he and we have his son Fred to thank for his joining PCA. Both Chuck and Fred are looking forward to participating in our Autocross series along with other upcoming events.  In fact Keith, his other son, is also a Porschephile…Fred now has to work on his brother to become a PCA member.

Chuck and Suzanne reside in bucolic Rehoboth, MA with their black Lab, Eliot. Eliot follows their other Labs named Byron and Shaw.  Now that Chuck is in ‘semi-retirement’, having been in the cranberry industry his whole life, he hopes to have more time for his Pearson 30 that he moors in Barrington, RI. He and Suzanne have just returned from a golfing vacation, their other non-automotive passion.

Welcome Chuck, Suzanne and Fred, we look forward to your active participation in our PCA Region.
