  • Preparing for the long sans-track winter ahead these web sites may fill some of your spare time in-between the hockey, football and basketball on TV...not to mention Speedvision for those fortunate enough to have it.

  • "www.byways.org" is a site of the Federal Highway Administration that sponsors the National Scenic Byways Program.

There are fifteen scenic byways in this national program; three in Oregon, the selections of which you just know have to be influenced by the states' tourism lobbies as much as the FHA may profess their objectivity. There is some interesting information on a state-by-state basis, clearly provided by each state as MA shows only three scenic routes while NH gives sixteen and we know MA has more than three. So, start planning your spring drives.

"www.theavanti.com" Do you remember the Avanti that Studebaker rolled out in the early '60s? Production was halted in '63 in the US and since then several owners have tried to revive the marque. John Seaton is the current CEO trying to get the model on the road with a fiberglass body mounted on a GM chassis with a modified Corvette engine under the hood. For $80-90K maybe you can be the first on your block.

"www.panozauto.com" Panoz is planning to build one hundred of their Esperante sports coupe a year at $80K. With a Ford SVT and an aluminum body it is expected that Ford mechanics can work on it (I don't think I'd want my Ford dealer working on my Panoz) while it will carry a Panoz warranty.

Cunningham Motor Company does not even have a web site yet but if you search for the company name you'll find some of the component suppliers referring to their involvement. This is now Briggs Cunningham III who plans to market a "C7" modeled after the Stutz or Dusenberg. He's planning a V-12 power plant, room for four adults and a $250K price tag. Their saying availability will be 2004, don't bet on it.

"www.zimmermotorcars.com" These have been around for a while but recently received a shot in the arm when Arthur Zimmer, a Syracuse entrepreneur saw one, liked the fact that it had his name, bought the company and claims he's currently 'breaking even'. He starts with a Mustang or Lincoln Town Car, drastically modifies the body, and the cars retain their Ford warranty because the engine is untouched. Ranging from $90-140K, why not get a Super Cup instead?

"www.moslerauto.com" Warren Mosler has been building his Intruder, Raptor and Consulier racecars since the mid-80s. The new MT900 was computer designed and is expected to be ready for sale next year. The racecar version will be $120K while the street version jumps to $160K

"www.saleen.com" Steve Saleen has previously been selling modified Mustangs but has broken from that mold with the S7. They've already sold forty-one and are planning on about a hundred per year. The S7 has big Brembos, Connolly English leather and front pivoting, gull-wing doors. Resembling a tiger shark with it's low, wide, long stance and air (gill) scoops they claim 0-60 in 4 sec., top speed of over 200 mph with the 550 hp engine and all for a mere $375K.

As with the all such limited production cars, since the Saleen must obtain its own certification for emissions and crash testing, it is offering their own warranty.

"www.shelbyamerican.com" We all remember Carroll Shelby's Cobras of the '70s and '80s. His latest is the Series 1 convertible built with a modified Olds Aurora V-8. Depending upon options and upgrades this will set you back $140-220K...BUT...you can place your order on line.

"www.packardmotorcar.com" While still in the design and finance seeking stages, President Roy Gullikson is planning touring cars resembling the originals, which were last produced in '58, with a custom aluminum engine and all wheel drive. If they ever get off the ground expected price is $155-275K.

"www.p-car.com" Robin Sun has put together a site aimed at the '95-'98 993 owner complete with a chatroom, hot links, general information and details on his own design, "RSR" after-market muffler for 993s. It sounds interesting, as is his approach. After getting your name on his short waiting list, he'll send you the mufflers for your installation. If you like them, send him your old mufflers (he modifies those for the next guy) and money. If you don't like them, return the modified units, no money, and put back your originals. Let me know if any of you try it out.

"www.rennlist.com" Many of you have already found this site complete with a "web-board" and very extensive Porsche mart divided by model.

"www.carcareonline.com" and "www.goodspeedmotoring.com" Thanks to Arnie Zann. Both these sites are devoted to non-mechanical care of your Porsche from soft-top care products to detailing brushes. There are many helpful hints, articles and extensive product selections that you can't find in the local NADA store.

"www.carlynx.com" I must give credit for this one to Steve Artick. It is the 'Mother'... the 'Granddaddy'...the 'Galaxy' of all automotive sites with links to thousands of web sites. Either click on the Porsche link or go direct with "www.carlynx.com/mak/por.htm." I cannot do it justice in this column, go there yourself, and then please don't forget your spouse and kids or they may trash your computer.
