Porsche Club of America
The Northeast Region

  • I've always been a numbers and demographics guy, not professionally but just something I've always found interesting. Guess it follows if one is analytical and pragmatic. Somewhere I heard it mentioned that our NER region had more licensed Club Racers than any other region. That's not sufficient for me so I called Susan Shire, the PCA Club Race Program Coordinator and inquired. As the data is not in an easily retrievable form we'll have to wait for Susan to publish a complete regional run-down as she's promised to do for a future issue of the newsletter. I can, however, report that the NER has 42 Club Racers...a very impressive number.

  • Following that vein I searched our own member database and can report the following demographics. If there are enough other 'numbers' members out there I can make this an annual column...let me know.

Our members' home states follow what you'd expect with several exceptions. Remember that as a PCA member you may belong to any region(s) you wish. MA is home to 1,243 of us followed by RI with 143; NH - 32; NY - 17; CT - 9; VT - 6; NJ, PA & ME each has 3; while CA, Hong Kong and Finland each has 1.

Next, I ran down the towns and cities in which we live, and due to space constraints only report those with ten (10) or more of us. I wonder if there's any significance in the fact that there are more communities starting with the letter 'C' (5) than any other, followed by 'B', 'S' and 'W' with four (4) each.

Then I noticed that of the 32 listed below, RI has 3. At first I thought "That seems like a lot as there are only 143 members in the state...and there should be many more MA communities listed than RI as there are more places in MA in which to live". BUT, it turns out that those 3 cities are 9.4% of the list while the 143 members are 9.8% of the total. I couldn't ask for a closer correlation. HOWEVER, there are many more towns in MA with fewer than 10 members than there are in RI.

    • Acton    - 10
    • Andover  - 22
    • Arlington  - 13
    • Bedford  - 11
    • Boston   - 44
    • Boxford  - 16
    • Brookline  - 13
    • Cambridge  - 28
    • Charlestown  - 10
    • Chelmsford  - 12
    • Cohasset  - 10
    • Concord  - 15
    • Duxbury  - 15
    • E Greenwich RI - 11
    • Framingham  - 21
    • Gloucester  - 12
    • Hingham  - 11
    • Hopkinton  - 14
    • Lexington  - 17
    • Lincoln  - 10
    • Marblehead  - 21
    • Natick   - 11
    • Newton  - 25
    • Providence RI  - 18
    • Shrewsbury  - 12
    • Southboro  - 14
    • Stow   - 11
    • Sudbury  - 19
    • Waltham  - 14
    • Warwick RI  - 14
    • Wayland  - 23
    • Wellsley  - 37

One has to be careful in reporting the above numbers as some members live in Southboro, Marlboro and Boxboro while others reside in Southborough, Marlborough, and Boxborough.

Finally, let's look at the Porsches we own. Obviously the following numbers do not account for multiple Porsche members since PCA only asks for one VIN and our database only has room for one car. There are other pitfalls; while most prevalent with the 911s we can also get trapped by other models i.e. 356, 924 etc. Some members report owning a 993 or 996 while others with a 993 or 996 report owning a 911. Further, while there are 514 - 911s reported there are also C2, C4, Cabriolet, Carrera, RS, RS America, S, SC, Speedster, Targa, TT, Turbo, C2S, C4S, E and T...all with a 911 prefix. And of course there are C4s, and Turbos with a 993 or 996 prefix. I think you get my drift here, so I've consolidated the myriad variations as shown below.

    • 356  - 44
    • 911  - 824
    • 912  - 15
    • 914  - 53
    • 924  - 20
    • 944  - 203
    • 928  - 51
    • 968  - 23
    • Boxster - 201

These are close approximations, as many members do not report a model change in the garage to PCA.

And You Thought Politicians Were Bad

    • From Murray Walker - "The lead car is absolutely unique, except for the one behind it which is identical."
    • From Greg Norman - "I owe a lot to my parents, especially my mother and father."
    • From Alan Minter - "Sure there have been injuries and deaths in boxing - but none of them serious."
    • From Terry Venables - "If history repeats itself, I should think we can expect the same thing again."
    • From Ron Atkinson - "He dribbles a lot and the opposition don't like it - you can see it all over their faces."
