Upshifting

  • The Boston Globe recently ran an article about the state of bicycle usage and how user friendly - or not - Boston and the surrounding areas are to bicycle riders. Naturally this will depend upon the individual community, i.e. Cambridge actually has some designated bicycle lanes that are painted on the streets, really. Then there's the Minuteman Bike Path - using an abandoned rail right of way - winding through some of the western suburbs until you come to the border of Weston and it stops. Westonites don't want such riff-raff riding through their community, another case of NIMBY.

But what got my blood boiling was merely thinking of the many inconsiderate and obnoxious bike riders on the roads these days. By way of full disclosure I must tell you that I'm a bike rider in the burbs as well as a pedestrian in Cambridge and Boston. However, unlike many others, when I'm biking or walking I'm constantly analyzing the ever changing situation and making decisions based upon what is practical, prudent, and safe both for me and the automobile(s) nearby. So dear reader, indulge me if you will as this is far less costly than were I to visit Dr. Jennifer Melfi.

Basically the entire ball of wax boils down to common sense and good judgment, lacking in far too many people. While driving I'm sure you've all come upon bicyclists either riding two or more abreast, or if single file, completely oblivious to what's happening around them and in the path of your car. I generally give them a short toot to let them know they're not alone on the road, suggesting that they move over to let me pass safely and not injure them. Well, when I get flipped the bird or yelled an obscenity telling me that they own the road; it is all I can do to refrain from using my car pro-actively and showing them who has the right of way. The other day I came into this situation and the bicyclist actually waved and acknowledged that he had been day dreaming. I was so surprised I almost ran into a tree - not.

"Right of way", that's an interesting concept. You boaters out there will understand that when two power vessels are converging or crossing paths, there are certain angles off the bow that determine which boat has the right of way. Many years ago while on a friend's boat, we were crossing New York harbor and the Queen Elizabeth was heading out to sea, which will tell you how long ago this was. Well, Armand had the right of way - legally - and being the cowboy that he was he was not about to change his course. The rest of us were ready to jump overboard (that might have saved us from being crushed but the suction created by the giant screw would have done us in) as we came so close to the Queen that we were under the overhang of her bow and looked directly overhead to the point of the bow.

There is 'right of way' and there is common sense. I think the entire problem as would be eliminated if the police gave tickets to bicyclists and pedestrians as readily as they do to motorists. Motorists will always get a ticket for running a red light, or driving the wrong way on a one way street, and sometimes even for driving to endanger. We've all seen bicyclists and pedestrians doing the same things, all the time, at the expense of the motorist. It's us drivers that have to watch out for the inconsiderate biker or walker crossing against traffic while on their cell phone, drinking a latte and chatting with a companion.

I'm sorry, it's not working. This pseudo therapy doesn't work. Just writing about it gets my blood boiling. Next stop, Dr. Melfi.
