Upshifting

NOR'EASTER Online - December 2005

  • As I sit here at my desk facing yet another Nor’easter deadline with my monthly affliction - writer’s block – I’m watching a herd of Whitetail deer, complete with antlered stag, dining in our neighbor’s yard. Sure, we often see their hoof prints in our yard and gardens but long ago discovered the solution to protecting our shrubs and flowers. After trying various things like fox urine, garlic & vinegar solutions, etc. which wash off with the first rain we came upon Irish Spring. I get no kickback here from Colgate-Palmolive and don’t own any of their stock unless it’s in any of my mutual funds or ETFs, but have to tell you all that it is marvelous and works like a charm.

  • As you may have discovered, deer love hostas of all varieties, tulips, many evergreen plants and lots more too numerous to mention. Well, just use your trusty pocket knife and walk around the yard shaving off slivers of the Irish Spring wherever you want to preserve plantings. The odor of the soap lasts through rains and generally works until the slivers have dissolved away in the rains. For larger bushes or small trees, we have a hydrangea tree (not a misprint, this is a small tree not a bush) from which we hang several slivers (the more surface area the more odor) of the soap in a piece of old nylon stocking. Any open weave bag will do like an onion bag.

Enough of this non-automotive stuff. Let’s get to the important part of this column. No, you’ll have to wait till later for the humor part of the column. For now we’re into DE for the 2006 season. With the exception of one possibility which may or may not come to fruition, the ’06 DE season is now confirmed and all should put these dates in your calendar right now. Don’t wait till you get to the office, do it now.

We have three single days at NHIS, all Mondays, to make it as easy as we can for everyone to get to track events. Even though you may think you’re not a track person; maybe you’ve done auto crosses, or rallyes, or Rambles or even a concourse here and there, TRY IT, you may like it. It is a total thrill to experience the performance of your Porsche the way it was meant to be driven. Sure you may hit 100 or 125 mph on Rte. 495, but hell, anyone can put their foot down and go fast on a highway. There’s nothing more exhilarating than doing 100 or 125 or 150 mph down the straight and then braking for a hair pin turn taken at 40 mph.

So, May 8, August 21 and September 11 are our NHIS dates, an easy 90 minutes from the Boston area. May 8th will include a “Ladies and Novice” (this will be a very low keyed day aimed at spanking new beginner drivers and others with 3 or fewer track days) program in addition to a regular DE. Stay tuned to this column for more in formation on the May 8th program. And our prelude to May 8th will be the February 19th Ground School at HMS in Peabody where you’ll get all your beginner questions and concerns addressed.

The Watkins Glen event remains the last Wednesday and Thursday in July, the 26th and 27th of the month. This is always a well attended event accompanied by wonderful weather. And if you track drivers are accompanied by a non-track driving significant other and you simply can not convince him/her – yes we have track driving women who are paired with non-track driving significant others, strange isn’t it?- to co- drive the car with you on the track, there are many fun vineyards in the area to visit.

Finally we have 2 LCMT - Mt. Tremblant, Canada for you new folks…please…give track driving a try, you have absolutely nothing to lose except a day or two in the sun with wonderful, friendly Porsche folks just like yourselves. Believe me, I have been a loner, non-joiner my entire life, and still am – except for our NER/PCA, and I speak from 10 years of experience here, it has been the best social and sports event (DE and Club Racing) experience I can remember. The animal house days of college are too far back to remember very clearly.

Our first LCMT event of the season will be July 10-12. Yes, a 3 day event, Monday to Wednesday in the middle of the Mt. Tremblant Blues Festival. Ask anyone who has been to Mt. Tremblant during that week and they’ll tell you it is an event not to be missed. In addition the Mt. Tremblant village is a delightful venue with many restaurants, great shopping and loads of activities for the non driving members of your family, bring them all along. More on Mt. Tremblant for you non initiated in future columns. For now, put the dates in your calendar.

The second LCMT event will be August 4, 5, 6. That’s right, another 3 day LCMT event, this one on a weekend, Friday-Saturday and Sunday. To make this work out for all we’ll be running the event jointly with our friends from CVR and NCR.

So there you have it. Six different events totaling 11 days at two world class tracks and NHIS only 90 minutes from home. Come on out and have the time of your life. If you don’t, you’re a wus!

A Few Thoughts to Get You Through Any Crises

    •  Indecision is the key to flexibility.
    •  You cannot tell which way the train went by looking at the track.
    •  The facts, though interesting, are irrelevant.
    •  Someone who thinks logically is a nice contrast to the real world.
    •  Anything worth fighting for is worth fighting dirty for.
    •  Suicide is the most sincere form of criticism.
    •  Friends may come and go, but enemies accumulate.
    •  By the time you can make ends meet, they’ve moved the ends.
    •  Never wrestle with a pig: You both get dirty and the pig likes it.
    •  One-seventh of your life is spent on Monday.
    •  The trouble with life is, you’re half way through it before you realize it’s a ‘do it yourself’ thing.
    •  Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.
    •  Finally – and the best:
    •  Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind. – Dr. Seuss
