I asked my fellow board members to list the Porsches they've owned and indicate their favorite. I thought it would be fun to play a little game matching the owners to their cars. Anyone who goes to DE events or the autocross will find this incredibly easy to do. It is interesting to see the variety across the board and the progression over time.

I'll start you off with my own history; you can match the rest.'71 914 1.8L bought 1981, needed lots of work, didn't keep it long, traded up to...'74 914 2.0L this got totaled in a chain-reaction pile-up one rainy morning as mentioned in a previous column. '76 911S since 1986. I bought this car when it was 10 years old with 110K miles already on it. It was in great shape. I became its third owner. This is my current Porsche and my favorite. It's had a few upgrades over the years, the most substantial being the installation of a reconditioned '86 Carrera engine. This is the car I learned to drive in because I started going to the autocross as soon as I bought it. A year or two later we took it to DE events at NHIS. It has been mostly retired to calmer street driving since we bought the 914-6 as a dedicated track car more than ten years ago. Mike keeps trying to find another streetcar for me so he use this one for a club racer. It'll happen someday.

#1. '97 993 C4S Aero II. New December 1996 sold May 1998. '93 911 RSA 18k miles. Bought May 1998, sold June 2000 to club member/friend George Skaubitis. '77 911 Race Car currently set up for PCA GT2s. Purchased April 2001. My RS America was my overall favorite car due to its ability to do so many different things so well. It is a fun streetcar, fast track car, and I won many times in my autocross class and had a few FTDs with it in stock configuration. It provides a great deal of feedback and is very forgiving. It possesses a "cult" appeal that very few other cars have (including other Porsches) which makes it even more satisfying to own. George is now enjoying the car as much as I did. The C4S was a "right sexy" car. With the Aero Kit II this car is a winner in many ways, especially when it comes to looks alone. It's black/black configuration and menacing wings and spoilers certainly gave it a Darth Vaderish look. AWD makes tire configurations difficult though and in retrospect, I had considerably more raw fun in my RSA for less than half the price. The racecar is huge fun, great handling, and contains all the safety equipment that you could desire. There is a great deal of satisfaction owning a racecar and it certainly was a life-long goal to do so. The only negative to owning a racecar is the limited amount of seat time one can obtain. General cost of ownership is higher and more "fussing" is required in its upkeep. I guess if the world were perfect I'd say having my racecar or a GT3 Cup car and an RSA or '94 3.6 Turbo might just make my perfect combination. Hmmm... I can feel my wallet shriveling already. (Notice this is the only list where the birth dates of the cars reads backwards chronologically.)

#2. '95 993 C4 - Our first, bought in '95. We knew what we wanted, flew to Isringhausen in Illinois and drove it home. Great start for first timers. '93 911 RS America, bought in '99 when we decided that we wanted a dedicated track car and returned the C4 to OEM specs for the street. RSA was well prepared for DE, but two years later upgraded it for Club Racing. '93 911 RS America, bought in '02 after previous RSA was totaled in a trailer incident on Mass Pike. This one is pretty much Club Race ready. The 993 C4 is our favorite street Porsche and the RS America our favorite track Porsche!! (Spoken just like a parent when asked to pick a favorite child!)

#3.'68 911 bought in 1984. Favorite project car. My father and I spent two years restoring it. '74 914 bought in 1996. Attempted 914-6 conversion project that failed due to rust. '88 911 Carerra bought in 1998. Very nice street car. '74 911 track car (the red one) bought 2000. Favorite. Great fun to drive on the track. '85 911 Carerra bought 2002. Current Porsche. F Class PCA Club racer.

#4. '83 944, '90 944S2, '86 944 Turbo. I am starting to learn to drive the turbo but the S2 was a very good car.

#5. 1985-86 '76 911 Targa, 1986-87 '79 928, 1988-89 '85 944, 1996-99 '88 944 Turbo, 1999-2001 '92 968, 2001- Present 2001 996. Believe it or not, I really couldn't pick a favorite, for driveability I remember the 928 as truly outstanding. For carefree fun, I'd lean on the 968. For the "best dressed" I'd go with the 996. I am sure the 996 will lead all categories at some point but it "just isn’t part of me" yet.

Notice the last three summaries surprisingly do not declare the current Porsche as the favorite. All three owners still have sweet memories of the last car and the new one will have to earn its place in their hearts.

#6. '89 944 S2, Guards Red w/Black Leather, 5 speed. My first Porsche. I bought it from a friend who needed to sell it because he was moving to North Dakota.'95 968, Speed Yellow w/Black Leather, 6 speed, M030 suspension. Bought this in 1995 with 9K on the odometer, drive it year-round.'93 968 Turbo RS racecar, White & Blue. This is my favorite. It is a special car - the last one of the 4 built by Porsche. Bought it from a guy in Germany after seeing an ad he placed on the internet. Didn't actually see the car until it arrived here in the States. That was a leap of faith that paid off as this car and driver have won many autocross FTDs recently.

How well do you know your Board of Directors?
