Seasons change gradually, fading into the next one subtly. One day it's warm, the next its cool, so we can hang on to the idea that the growing/driving season isn't over yet. Then one day the leaves are falling and the morning temps are consistently at or below freezing and you have to admit it's over. As I write this, the weather report is promising snow showers tomorrow morning. It might be time to put the 911 in for winter hibernation. Driver's Ed events are all done in the region. Some die-hard enthusiasts are traveling south to warmer climes to extend their driving season. Road Atlanta and Virginia International Raceway at the beginning of November beckon to those who can't get enough in our short season. Others are planning ahead for an early start next year. The winter mantra for those who suffer severe withdrawal is always "Be Ready for Sebring" in central Florida in February. The plans are made and tinkering begins on the projects that will squeeze a little more horsepower or better handling from the trusty steed. Or maybe an upgrade in the equipment is on the wish list. Gardening this time of year is all about banking on results for next year. Planting bulbs and fall perennials that will reward the effort in the future. Now it’s mostly cutting down, cleaning up and putting a blanket of mulch on the beds. Planning for next year will have to get me through until the weather warms up. Fortunately I get practically every gardening catalog there is. The pretty pictures give me hope through the dark months. There's still plenty of work left to do on my garden notebook that I started last winter. I'm playing catch up with that project since I didn't catalog anything the first eleven years. Monthly meetings are the bright spots on the calendar this time of year. I'm looking forward the Vic Elford meeting this weekend (10/26). Given the popularity of the Denise McCluggage lecture at the PorscheFest, this meeting should be well attended and well worth the time. Vic started driving for Porsche in 1967. That year he won the European GT Rally Championship. In 1968 he won the Monte Carlo Rally in a 911, and the 24 hours of Daytona in a 907. In 1971 he won the 24 hours of Daytona again in a 907, and the 12 hours of Sebring in a 917. Of course he drove other marques in his long and successful career, winning rallies and races on all the great courses in Europe. I expect he has many interesting stories to tell. Then there's the Annual Dinner in December. The Annual Dinner is always a good time. It's nice to see your friends from the track, autocross, concours and tech meetings all cleaned up, looking polished and pretty at least once a year. This year it's located just west of 495 to give that group of the membership the logistical advantage. It is a primary concern of the board of directors that the dinner be moved around the region on a regular basis. If it hasn't come to your corner of the world recently maybe you should volunteer to find the perfect site. Of course there's more to it than that. The food has to be great, the room has to be big enough for 125-150 people and you have to come up with a killer idea for the centerpieces! The door prizes aren't bad either. Some of our sponsors get in the holiday mood and give us some great stuff. Zone 1 always sends a gift coupon good for any zone event, like the Zone 1 Autocross that was held in Springfield, MA this year. Congratulations to Linda Kogan of NER who won Ladies FTD. Check out the results on the Zone One website at vista.pca.org//zone1/2002%20Autocross%20Results.txt to see how all the NER competitors did. Odd n' Ends from PCA: The clubs privacy policy will soon be posted on the website. Basically it will say membership info is confidential. PCA does not sell or distribute any member’s info. Nice to know someone can keep a secret. PCNA has a new liaison to PCA. Jack Bair resides in Atlanta but will be making the rounds to take the pulse of the people. He already started by attending the parade this summer. Jack can be reached at jbair@porschecars.com. The next Porsche Parade will be in Tampa, FL June 22-28, 2003. Some like it hot! Meanwhile back to NER, the board decided at the last meeting that given the low turn out for the Rumble, next year it will be replaced with a extra autocross open to everyone who wants to compete or just have a fun day. |
