2002 New England Ramble - May 4th & 5th |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||
For those who have never done one, the Spring Ramble really does come close to the dictionary definition. We start out on Saturday morning and drive a winding route through northern New England, stopping for lunch and eventually dinner with an overnight stay at a world famous destination, which has superb cuisine and a splendid location. And as in past years the New England Ramble is sponsored by:
1. The Destination: This will be the first Spring Ramble to Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, where we'll be staying at the Mount Washington Hotel, scene of the 1944 International Monetary Conference, which arguably shaped the globalized world that we live in today. If you get a room, which was occupied by a delegate to the Conference, you will find a brass plate on your door identifying the delegate and the country represented. The venue is truly grande, including such amenities as a real Prohibition era bar hidden away in the stone foundation under the steps leading up to the main entrance. Also, by early May, the roads in northern New Hampshire will be relatively deserted, which might induce the more daring among you to juice it up a little on the empty stretches, but you never heard that here. 2. The Drill: Our semi-successful formula, derived from years of constructive suggestions at cocktail parties, is to start at a pre-determined location and send off about 100 Porsches with a set of easy to follow directions, stop at the Lake Sunapee Country Club for lunch and then motor up to Bretton Woods. After checking in at the Inn (bad pun intended), you are free to use any of the resort's multiple facilities (including the bar) or even climb one of the Presidentials. (If the latter in early May, bring your Arctic gear, your GPS and a credit card to pay $3-5K to N.H. Fish and Game if they have to go up and find you.) Okay, okay, let's be realistic - maybe a nap. You will, of course, want to waken in time to attend the Cocktail Party where you will meet one of the nicest groups of people you could hope to find (because they all think Porsche is the ONLY car to own. Hors d'oevres are included in the entry fee, but the drinks are on you. Following cocktails we will repair to dinner (Gentlemen in Jackets, please) and perhaps a drop or two of wine (alas, the latter, not being included in the dinner price, is on your nickel) and a very few, well-chosen words. Because the Mount Washington is a Modified American Plan hotel, you will be able to order on the spot from the entire menu, will be encouraged to dance in the adjacent Main Dining Room (live full dance orchestra) and enjoy Brunch on Sunday morning before our departure. After Sunday Brunch you will be free to head south (or east or west or north, depending on your whim of the moment). I suppose if you're feeling "Presidential", you might want to look into a ride up Mt. Washington on the Cog Railway, weather and operating schedules permitting. We'll also provide you with interesting directions for a fun run down to one of the Interstates and back home, but there will be no organized start for this portion of the event. So, the devil is in the details, which are: 1. Fill in the entry form and send to Murray Mathews at the address on the form. Include $30 per participating person ($40 after April 5th).
Payment at the Mount Washington Hotel: (Do not send this money to me.) You will make a deposit for your stay, including Saturday dinner and Sunday brunch with a credit card when you make your reservation. All rooms are $225.00 per room MAP, double occupancy; which includes Saturday dinner and Sunday brunch for both occupants, exclusive of the 15% gratuity and New Hampshire's 8% Room and Meals (read flatlander) Tax. Questions?? Call Murray at 508-653-5755 or e-mail me at ramble@porschenet.com Don't Forget: Gentlemen must be in jackets for Dinner.
